Though the Baltimore Ravens have been an offensive juggernaut and record-setter on the ground over the past two seasons, the Lamar Jackson-led offense has long needed a top-flight receiver added to the fold.
That's just what Baltimore has done.
The Ravens selected Minnesota wide receiver Rashod Bateman with the No. 27 overall pick in the 2021 ¹ú²úÍâÁ÷ÍøDraft on Thursday night.
Having traded offensive tackle Orlando Brown to the Chiefs less than a week ahead of the draft, the Ravens weren't done in the first round and bolstered their defense with the selection of Penn State linebacker Jayson Oweh at No. 31, a pick obtained from Kansas City.
Oweh's a pass rusher who should fit nicely into the Ravens scheme. Oweh didn't muster a sack this past season, but he has the potential to develop into a stellar pro as he boasts freak athleticism.
While it might be a bit too premature to cast Bateman as the new No. 1 receiver for the Ravens ahead of Marquise Brown or Sammy Watkins, the former Golden Gopher instantly adds promise and another terrific option to the Ravens' offense.
A stellar route runner with an excellent overall game and versatility, Bateman showcased his skills to the tune of 60 receptions for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns in a 13-game 2019 sophomore season. This past abbreviated campaign with Minnesota saw him tally 36 catches for 472 yards and a pair of scores.
The Ravens had a glaring need on the outside heading into Thursday night and they've done their best to fill it and aid Jackson, their former AP ¹ú²úÍâÁ÷ÍøMost Valuable Player.
