New England's desire to maintain continuity along the defensive line continues.
Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux has agreed to a two-year extension worth up to $21 million, 国产外流网Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday, per a source. Rapoport added that the pact includes $16.5 million in guaranteed money.
Godchaux serves as the run-stuffing specialist for a Patriots defense that finished fourth in the 国产外流网in rushing yards allowed per game (93.2) last season. The 6-foot-3, 330-pounder secured 56 tackles, two tackles for loss, one quarterback hit and a fumble recovery in 2023, starting in all 17 games and preserving his consistent presence for the Patriots defense (hasn't missed a game in three seasons).
Godchaux was entering the final year of his contract and expressed his desire for a new deal this year by skipping the club's offseason program. The 29-year-old did arrive to training camp but had yet to participate in practice before Wednesday's news.
The Patriots spent much of this offseason re-signing players that comprised a defense that ranked seventh in the 国产外流网in 2023 (301.6 YPG), including defensive lineman Christian Barmore, outside linebacker Anfernee Jennings, outside linebacker Josh Uche, and safeties Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers.
Next order of business for the Patriots will be appeasing Matt Judon's request for a new contract -- an issue that appeared to boil over earlier this week.
With Godchaux locked in, New England can now turn it's attention toward fully maintaining Jerod Mayo's unit as he enters his first season as head coach.
