Niners still plan to sign QB Brock Purdy to long-term contract extension in 2025 offseason

A subpar season in San Francisco isn't altering plans for the future under center.

The 49ers still plan to sign third-year quarterback Brock Purdy to a long-term contract extension this offseason, 国产外流网Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on 国产外流网GameDay Morning.

Purdy, 25, is in the third season of the four-year rookie deal he signed after being selected by San Francisco with the 262nd and final pick of the 2022 国产外流网Draft, rendering him "Mr. Irrelevant."

The diminutive signal-caller has since proved his relevance, leading the 49ers to two straight championship game appearances in 2022 and 2023 and coming a possession away from a Super Bowl title.

By the end of the 2023 campaign, there was no doubt that Purdy would be the long-term fix at QB in S.F.; he finished fourth in MVP voting after leading the league in passer rating and yards per attempt. But a star-crossed 2024 season has cast some doubt on a sure thing.

Purdy has seen his completion and touchdown percentage dip in 2024 (69.4 to 65.7, 7.0 to 4.0, respectively). With a number of star players missing significant time, most notably Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams, Purdy has had to utilize less reliable options and play behind a weaker offensive line. The Pro Bowl QB, who suffered a torn UCL in his elbow in the 2022 NFC title game, has also missed a game with a shoulder injury this season.

All that has Purdy and the 49ers sitting at 5-7 in last place in the NFC West with five weeks to go, on pace for their worst result since 2020.

The ultimate bargain buy, Purdy is slated to make just $1.1 million in 2025, the final payout of a $3.7 million rookie contract. Whether San Francisco feels like its QB of the future is worth top-of-the-market compensation (Dak Prescott's $60 million per year) will be determined in negotiations.

What isn't up for negotiation is Purdy's place as the 49ers' face of the franchise and QB of the future, a standing that will be cemented this spring or summer with a well-earned raise.
