JuJu Smith-Schuster is back in Kanas City.
The former Super Bowl-winning receiver is signing with the Chiefs, 国产外流网Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Monday, per a source informed of the deal. The team has since announced the news.
Smith-Schuster led K.C. wide receivers in 2022, generating 933 yards on 78 catches with three touchdowns -- behind only Travis Kelce in yards and catches.
The 27-year-old inked a three-year contract in New England last season but struggled with injuries and consistency. He caught just 29 passes for 260 yards in 11 games. The Patriots released Smith-Schuster earlier this month.
Given the dead money involved in his release from New England, it's likely a minimum-level deal in Kansas City.
The Chiefs have been dealing with a shoulder injury to Hollywood Brown, which could have prompted the addition this late in the process. With Brown sidelined, Kansas City has been running with Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Justin Watson atop the depth chart during preseason action. K.C. might simply want to add another veteran presence to the group; Rice's legal situation, which isn't yet resolved, could also be a factor.
Andy Reid's crew has conducted a battle for the final couple of WR spots during training camp. The addition of Smith-Schuster could affect whether players like Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney or Justyn Ross make the squad.
